Climate and Topography

The climate is cool and refreshing almost the whole year. There is no considerable variation between the temperatures during the summer (11 to 20 degrees C.) and the winter (8 to 17 degrees C.). The cool breeze from the lake keeps the climate quasi temperate even in the peak summer months. The annual rainfall is a moderate 165 CMs, between June and November, with the major portion in October-November, from the North East Monsoon. April-June is the ‘tourist season’ with warm sunshine and occasional showers.

Flora and Fauna

Endemic and rare vegetation, including several varieties of wild orchids, balsams, ferns, etc, thrive under the canopy of the tall and ancient trees in the sholas of the valleys watered by perennial streams and rivulets. Neelakurinji, which mass-blooms once in twelve years and turn the hillsides lilac, is the most noteworthy among the several rare species found on the grasslands. Several endemic varieties fish and mountain trout , rare species of frogs, toads and other amphibians, colorful butterflies, moths and other insect life, endemic bird varieties whose sweet warbling fill the air and small, harmless , wild animals like varieties of squirrel, deer and rabbit thrive on the grasslands and in the sholas.
